What is an ADU?

An ADU is a fully functioning living space, made up of a sleeping area, kitchen, and bathroom. It’s a small unit that’s situated on the same lot as an existing single-family home. Also known as a guest house, mother-in-law suite, or backyard cottage, an ADU must meet certain zoning requirements, which vary from each city and county. While some ADUs are built as a separate part of a home, others are additions to the current structure.

Since building an ADU is a complex endeavor, you owe it to yourself to trust our knowledgeable and experienced contractors with your project. We’ll work with you to ensure your ADU is on a properly zoned lot, meets the allowable square footage requirements, and has received all of the appropriate permits. In addition, our team will handle every aspect of the design and construction, including foundation, utilities, framing, and finishes.

Types of ADUs

here are several types of ADUs including:

Detached ADU

A detached ADU is a structure that’s independent of the primary property and includes a kitchen, bathroom, storage, and living space.

Attached ADU

An attached ADU is essentially an addition to the primary property and features a private entrance.

Interior Conversion ADU

Often referred to as a junior ADU, an interior conversion ADU adapts a basement, attic, or bedroom into a self-contained unit with amenities.

Garage Conversion ADU

A garage conversion ADU transforms an attached or detached garage into an individual unit with amenities.

Benefits of ADUs

There are a variety of reasons you may move forward with an ADU. If you’d like to keep an aging family member nearby, it can allow them to maintain their independence while giving you the ability to care for them whenever they need your help.

Also, if your friends and family members visit often, an ADU can be a great place to house them. With an ADU, both of you can enjoy space and privacy. In addition, adding an ADU makes it easy and convenient to rent to long-term tenants or short-term guests who are traveling for work or pleasure.

Lastly, an ADU can increase your property value as most homeowners are willing to pay more for a home with an ADU on it. They also utilize fewer resources than your typical single-family home, keeping your utility bills low and reducing carbon emissions.
